"Confection" examines the complexities of internalized colorism and skin privilege. In the beauty industry and everyday vernacular, food terms are frequently used as color descriptors for darker skin colors. Terms like "deep chocolate" or "honey" or "espresso" show up constantly as ways to define black women's skin tones. By likening darker skin to delicacies one could consume, these terms become a way of exoticizing and reducing black women to expendable "treats".
